Question:
What is the ruling of the erudite ‘Úlamā in the following case: whether it is permissible to make use of black dye (in the hair and beard)? Some ‘Úlamā have ruled it as permissible.
Answer:
The applying of a red or yellowish colour is preferred; [however] yellowish (saffron like) is better.
Black dye has been referred to as the dye of the disbelievers in the prophetic narrations. It is stated in a blessed Ḥadīth that on the day of Judgement Almighty Allah will make such an individual’s face black [who applies black dye].
This dye is forbidden [ḥarām]. The fatwā (verdict) of permissibility is baseless and rejected.
